Fleet Overview

The existing fleet sailing on hydrogen is dominated by offshore vessels and inland ships using compressed hydrogen stored in swappable containers with fuel cells for propulsion power. Three of these inland ships sail in the Netherlands.

The fleet is transitioning: while early vessels relied on compressed hydrogen for auxiliary power, 2026 will see the arrival of the first seagoing vessels with multi-MW fuel cell installations for propulsion.

Fleet Development

Fleet development shows a rapid increase from 2025, a pivotal year with the arrival of multi-MW fuel cell vessels and the first seagoing hydrogen ships. Inland shipping and offshore CTVs dominate the operational fleet.

2026 and beyond will see the arrival of the first large seagoing vessels with multi-MW fuel cell installations for propulsion.

Fuel Cell Capacity

Total fuel cell energy systems in vessels delivered and on order (in megawatts) increases significantly from 2025, with the majority (30+ MW) of fuel cells delivered by PowerCell due to their supply to Torghatten Nord and the cruise vessels on order at Fincantieri.

Note: Vessels related to CMB.Tech are not included in the fuel cell overview since they use upgraded MAN combustion engines on hydrogen rather than fuel cells.

Hydrogen Storage

The operational fleet is operating primarily on compressed hydrogen, with liquid hydrogen adopted by two operational vessels. Liquid hydrogen adoption is expected to accelerate as LH2 infrastructure matures and larger vessels with higher energy demands enter service.
